Different Technical Aspects in Digital Media (Part 2)

As part of task 1, we also had to pick four post-production software that is used in the industry, and so some research about them. My chosen software are Adobe Premiere, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects and Davinci Resolve.

1. Adobe Premiere Pro cc

Adobe Premiere is one of the most commonly used software for video editing. It is one of the Adobe Creative Cloud software family developed by Adobe inc (hence the CC in its name). This software is able to edit any kind of footage, irrelevant the camera that is used, up to 8K resolutions. Although nowadays this software works on both Windows and Mac operating systems, when it was introduced back in 1991, it used to work only on Mac OS. Nowadays, in 2021, Premiere Pro is at version 15, representing the long history of improvements, new features, bug fixes and so on. In terms of editing, it is timeline-based, and one can find numerous tutorials and courses to learn how to use it.

Advantages:

  • High quality audio and video editing (up to 8K).

  • Multi-cam editing.

  • Works with various video formats.

  • Available on both Windows and Mac Operating system.

  • Part of the Adobe Creative Cloud.

Disadvantages:

  • It can be quite heavy for a PC to load it.

  • Frequent glitches.

  • Quite expensive to use.

02. Adobe Illustrator CC

Adobe Illustrator is a Vector-based software for creating professional drawings and artwork which works on both Mac and Windows operating systems. This software is used to create stunning digital and printed images including cartoons, charts, logos and other illustrations. Illustrator is also known for giving the possibility to create text around a curve, which is especially handy for logos. Furthermore, this software works with numerous file formats that are used in the industry, giving it more flexibility than it already has. Finally, this software is also used to create mockups which can give a clear image to a client of how will the website look like once it will be completed. Illustrator also forms part of the Creative Cloud as explained earlier on, and it is at its 26th version.

Advantages:

  • Helpful user interface (especially when compared to Photoshop)

  • Completely scalable, since it is vector-based.

  • Creates files that are manageable in terms of storage.

  • Available on both Windows and Mac Operating system.

  • Part of the Adobe Creative Cloud.

Disadvantages:

  • It may be difficult for beginners to use it.

  • It requires lots of space.

  • Quite expensive to use.

03. Adobe After Effects CC

This software is one of the leading in the industry when it comes to animation and creative compositions. It is used by most motion graphics and visual effects artists. It gives endless possibilities to create animated titles, credits, lower thirds and set any kind of graphic in motion. As with the other Adobe software, this is also part of the Abobe Creative Cloud, giving possibilities to seamlessly work with other software of the same developer.

Advantages:

  • It is able to handle any type of complex video editing.

  • You can add plugins to the software, depending on the project that you are working on.

  • Vector based animations.

  • Available on both Windows and Mac Operating system.

  • Part of the Adobe Creative Cloud.

Disadvantages:

  • Consumes a-lot of RAM.

  • Requires a high end graphics card to work better.

  • Plug-ins may frequently crash the software.

  • It requires lots of space.

  • Quite expensive to use.

04. Davinci Resolve

DaVinci Resolve is a highly sophisticated software by BlackMagic Design, which combines video editing, colour correction, visual effects and audio post-production in just 1 software. In difference to the previous software, this one has a free version which is already sufficient to do some good edits. However, there is also a commercial version of this software which can be purchased. It also works on both Windows and Mac operating systems.

Advantages:

  • It is able to handle any type of complex video editing.

  • The free version is sufficient to handle basic to complex video editing.

  • It has very good colour grading features.

  • It also has excellent effects editing features and audio editing.

  • Available on both Windows and Mac Operating system.

Disadvantages:

  • Works differently than Adobe's layering features, difficult to learn.

  • Requires a high end graphics card to work better.
